New Old Music

Shila Amzah - 最長的電影
(The Longest Movie)

She was a contestant on a show called "One in a Million," a Malaysian singing competition show, but is better known from a Chinese singing competition called "I Am a Singer." Not winning either show, she has made critical acclaim and has a promising career ahead of her. I think what made me interested in her would be this song, proving all of the work she's been through truly pays off. I may not know what it's about just yet, but listening to this already gives me the chills for being a remarkable single. And this is just the tip of the iceberg, who knows what she'll make next.

An Xin Ya - 我可以很勇敢
(I Can Be Very Brave)

I believe my friend showed me this song, while singing this at karaoke. Although the video may be questionable, it's nonetheless a beautiful song. It's about getting through a tough experience, and the challenges that the artist has faced. It's not the most vocal-heavy song, but easy to sing along and understand its message (again, working on that). Songs like these are encouraging to learn a new language, especially when the characters are on the screen to follow along. Very soft with the instrumentation, which I enjoy, showcasing the delicate voice that the artist offers.

Dai Ai Ling ft SHIN - 壞壞惹人愛
(Nasty Lover)

Now to shake things up is this single that I heard on the radio - I don't always listen to this particular station, but when I do, they always play something different (including the language). It's edgier than any of the entires this month, but that is also what makes it interesting. She's singing her dirty ditty with the male counterpart, developing this over the top chemistry. Not expected from Chinese music, but then again, not everything is Pop music from foreign countries. But on the other hand, it's easy to follow along, and I better understand what this song is about after endless repetitions d":

Teresa Teng - 何日君再來
(When Will You Come Again)

I decided to listen to more Mandarin music to hopefully hear the language through a medium that I enjoy. To start of easily, here is Teresa Teng, an artist most Chinese and Taiwanese people can recognize. Sure, her music may be the suited for the older audience, but it's easy to follow along with a melodic beat that is impossible to get sick and tired of - well, until I can understand what it means. For a song that seems sweet, it comes with a lot of controversy - what a highlight to start off this discovery into Chinese music, can't wait to see the variety I'm about to dive in to.

Born Ruffians - Permanent Hesitation

It's been a while that I've heard this song, but only recently have I been jamming to this beat all summer. As it comes to an end, summer can be explained best with exciting and unknown emotions that arise. One part, it's a pretty upbeat tune; but on the other side, it's a story on the opposite end of happiness. The confliction between deciding what's wrong or right is justified with this little ditty from the Canadian band. If there is anything missing out there, it's Canadian music. I mean, if it sounds a lot like this, when will it be their time to hog the spotlight? Better be soon.

The Mowgli's - San Francisco

Sometimes listening to your usual radio stations can make you tired of them - so you got to tune into something else. Take this song, extremely exciting and full of energy that's an indescribable feeling. It's not completely happy, and you can hint the craziness happening within the vocals. Part anthem, the band takes you on a ride to unexplored territories, a change that you might need to shake things up. Pretty easy to follow along, the simplicity of it is what makes it all enjoyable. Here's to trying something new, because you'll never know what you might just find.

Andy Grammer - Fine By Me

This sounds like a laid back good time. Before Mr. Grammer came out with his ubiquitous hokey single that won't stop on the radio, he's been making these ear worm gems for a long time. If movie themes were a genre of music, I think Andy would be the king of that. It's very warm and light-hearted, all kinds of good fun that everyone can enjoy. Sometimes the cuteness can overwhelm even the most loving-absober of a person, but once in a while, this stuff is a pleasure. Perhaps finding songs like these is what makes them exciting, seeing what else is out there that makes you happy.
