Sincerely, 2013

Although some songs have made it big this year, their release date indicates that it has been a year too late. This time, I have compiled a Top 15 due to the lack of Canadian content I found. What is included in this list that is not part of the Top 100? Check it out.

New Old Music: The Best Discoveries

If you feel like this whole year has been a blur, you are not the only one. When it comes to music, I tend to find some great songs a few years after its release, while other times they are tracks that are not even a single that was released. Now, let me show you what New Old Music I found from this year (and believe me, it's good).

And I ain't going back...

Honourable Mentions

It's that time of year again: counting down the Top 100 songs of 2014. But before getting to that list, there are always a bunch that don't quite crack the list. So to not forget about them, here are the 30 contenders that made an impact to my ears. Thanks for the sounds!

Keep it number one, that's easy mathematics...

Concert Review: Very Good Bad Thing Tour

What an unexpected way to end the year: going to a concert knowing barely any songs. But might I say, that it was exceptional. Not exactly my taste in music, but definitely a grower now that I have experienced an electrified night.

December 14, 2014: The day I witnessed Mother Mother before my eyes. So, let's take an adventure.

It was all about the lighting: a spectacle on its own

Swing ft Dr. Alban - Sweet Dreams

You know it's the 90s when: a) it's Europop, and b) it samples a song roughly 10 years its senior. Not exactly like the rest, where it samples the beat. Instead, it adds rap verses to a dance beat that people got down to in the 90s (yes, this is what is essentially sounded like). It cradles between a fine line of awesome and awful, and I don't quite know where it stands. Just remember this: the 90s were very open to anything, so it was certainly a hit back in its days. Not really sure of the artist, but he made an interesting song to begin with even more interesting. Well played, sir, you make me confused d";

Stefy - Chelsea

Remember the film John Tucker Must Die? Typical story of how boy dates three girls at once, as they try to destroy him by adding the new girl into the mix. I guess that's why this song fits in with the film, because she found her man all over Chelsea o_o! After all, everybody is looking for something c"; But the strange thing about this song is, she is blaming herself for leaving him with her... What a twist that is. So is she angry, or regretting her decision for knowing what was going down? It's certainly a torture game with this song, making perfect sense to sample the beat of Sweet Dreams.

The Cheetah Girls - Everybody

Although this single is well known by Britney Spears, the demo by the Cheetah Girls have a different vibe. For starters, they are a band aimed towards kids, so the song has to be 'clean,' even though 'Sweet Dreams' isn't really, well, appropriate. Second, they give their own flavour to the song, like it's sexier when they don't sing the obvious (innocence is a turn on, perhaps?) And finally, maybe this is a song that you get your groove on, if you know what I mean. After all, all flavours are available [if you know what I mean ;)] Not too shabby for a sampling, making it more appealing than it already is.

P!nk ft Redman - Get The Party Started (Sweet Dreams Remix)

If there is one iconic song of the 80s, I think it would have to be Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams. With the blessing of that song, this month is dedicated to artists who have sampled them in their work. To begin things, P!nk made a remix of her smash single 'Get The Party Started.' When I heard this, I honestly thought it was so off that it was totally on! There is a funk persona added to the song, like mischief is about to happen, but when you least expect it. Eerily danceable, yet I want to song to continue beyond 4 minutes. Thank you to P!nk & Redman for creating such a unique twist to the hit!

Kelly Clarkson - Tie It Up

It may all be over, but this is pretty much sums up the experience: partying it up! After all of the planning, the preparing, and the stress it has caused everyone, just glad they're finally married d": And adding a little Country to any wedding gets everyone all fired up on the dance floor. Kelly Clarkson certainly knows how it all works, she got married last year! This little ditty is a thrill to listen to, for a Reception kind of vibe, stuff like that going on. The memories will always last, but the party has just begun. So let's get things rolling, because forever is a long time <3 p="">

Westlife - Beautiful In White

Boy band, check. Sampling a classical piece, check. Lyrics that will sob your heart out, CHECK. If this isn't the perfect Wedding Song, I don't know what is. However, my sister isn't really into the sappy Love Songs, otherwise I would have sung this (maybe I'll upload it one day). Finding a Wedding song from the Groom's perspective can be quite a challenge, but this says everything that goes through his mind perfectly. From the beginning until the end of time, that beauty resembles the life they will share together: pure love that is everlasting. Well done, Generic Pop that can make you shed a tear c':

Colbie Caillat - I Do

Who can resist the charm of Colbie Caillat? This song is adorable, all about her future plans spending the rest of her life with that special someone :"3 Maybe it's a little bit overdone with the repetitive lyrics, but when that moment comes, I'm pretty sure those are the only words you'll be saying over and over again. Over your head and running for the hills, because she's madly in love with the one that just proposed to her. Oh Colbie, you never disappoint with your irresistible charisma. I feel that only vibes like these will be present at my sister's wedding... I can't wait for it!

Jason Derulo - Marry Me

The theme on New Old Music is all about what else? Marriage! As my sister is getting married, I have decided to show all of the wedding songs that I found - who knew there would be so many though o_O Usually known for his Dance Tracks, Jason Derulo created this ballad, and though it doesn't venture that far from his usual style, I will admit it's great to see his, cleaner side if I were to put it delicately. It's about the life he's preparing for, the shining moment where he turns from a boy into a man. And with Jordin Sparks as his wife, who wouldn't be up on Cloud 9? Bravo, Mister Derulo.

C2C - Down The Road

Tired of this Western/Dance collision? I'm not, it keeps getting better and better. And clearly, it was hot 2 years ago, and it's still hot today. Take a DJ, scratch an old-ispired song, and it becomes one fun Dosey-Doe (might be the wrong dance, but can't think of a more Western styled dance than that). It's the person one might fear when they enter the bar, because you know it's going to be one long night once they entered the room. That's what I think of this song, it keeps you interested, but you don't want to entice it, otherwise it'll explode on you. Well done to the French DJs, and an amusing video as well.

Sub Focus ft Alpines - Tidal Wave

I can't remember which website I saw the video where students from Purdue Gymnastics just basically showed off. Though entertaining, it doesn't really reflect the ideas behind the sound. This is rather slow Electronic music, but the genre can be described differently depending who you ask. Peaceful, yet loud at the same time, its simplicity makes an impact towards the end where it gets busy. Consider this song a metaphor for the message behind it: slow and steady, leading to faster and more exciting stages c"; It's okay if you don't get it right now, but just know that it is not simply an innocent song... Perfect for summer.

Elvis Presley - Blue Hawaii

To celebrate Father's Day, I give this discovery to the man that my father has adored for years. I guess you can say when it comes to karaoke, my father likes to imitate a voice similar to the King himself. And since there is a summer theme to this month's postings, I have picked the most tropical song I could find that I never heard of before. It has everything you imagine in a Hawaiian song: ukeleles, xylophones, and that strum that reminds you of waves. Here's to the man that brought romance to both the screen and to the ears of many. In a sense, you could say fathers are like Elvis, the person that others want to be or be with. Got to give it to fathers, they are fascinating people that leave you in awe.

ICE - à¹„อซ์ ศรัณยู (Dare)

You may not know what's going on in the song, but that idiotic sound they make with their mouth is definitely infectious to the point that you'll be doing it without thought. For those who are not familiar with the artist, his name is Ice Sarunyu. Long time ago, I had an estranged relationship with Thai Music, because of its amusement. This one is no exception, and when it comes to this artist, there is always something that he comes up with that makes you smile. Whether it's nonsense lyrics or stupidly easy dance moves, it makes me wonder why Thai Music hasn't made a breakthrough like KPop d":

Priyanka ft Pitbull - Exotic

Now that it is June, let's heat things up with some absolutely hot music that I have just discovered. You may have not heard of Priyanka before, but I'm pretty sure you are familiar with Beauty Pageants c"; She won the title of Miss World back in 2000, and now she is one of Bollywood's biggest stars. Now she tries to conquer the music scene, and this single ain't too shabby. It's a Dance Track (what else would you expect?), and she teams up with Pitbull... If that's not an instant hit, I don't know what is. What makes the song stand out are the Hindi parts, and the fact that when she sings, she makes her lyrics sound sensual than just saying it. Wonder what else she's got, I am very intrigued. Not really sure why it's her song when Pitbull has more to do with it than she does - but let's give her a try, shall we?

Christina Milian - Just A Little Bit

Do you ever listen to music while showering? That's my brother. And it's not that I don't mind it, I just wish there was a variety of songs being played. Of all the songs he played, this one I liked the most. Christina Milian had a wonderful career, I wish she released more music. This could be the sole reason why she's still valid: with such a simple rhythm and message, she makes it into a hit. Though rather sexual to be listening to in the shower, the song has a vibe that makes you want more. Just making 3 minutes, it feels that the song was cut short. I think she needs to make a Part II, yes?!

Mae - Tisbury Lane

My friend (re)introduced this song to me... I think. We were talking about a movie called 5 Centimetres Per Second (a sad film), and he said that this was in the film. I can't exactly remember when it plays (or if it's in the film at all); I saw this a long time ago. But anyways, onto the song: it's very mellow, and it puts depth to the story that is being told. The girl doesn't want to make a mistake, but she feels like it's the only way to end further sadness. But if she does make a mistake, will you forgive her? Not sure if they had other singles, hopefully they come out with more, it's intriguing.

Diana Ross - Ain't No Mountain High Enough

Being Mother's Day, I will dedicate this post to my mother :"3 She is a fan of Diana Ross, and though I could have selected any other song, this one will always be the estranged hit that I never understood. Like, why is she speaking for most of the song? But she makes it up for the chorus, that is simply genius and dramatic at once. I love it compared to the original (which is probably known by all), and she makes it a song of her own. This is how a cover is done, and with a voice like that, no one is complaining, right? My mother has great taste in music and talented artists; she knows best.

Emeli Sandé - Read All About It, Part III

The original version was by Professor Green, which tells a story of the artists' life. Similar to his version, Sandé made her own rendition, being Part III of an incredible masterpiece. If listening to the original gave you chills, this will definitely make you cold to the bone. Her vocals are loud for all to hear, and it's truly a shame that she didn't quite breakthrough in North America. What makes it unique is how the song focuses on her message, saying that everyone must speak out to fight for what you believe in, and to always be brave. It's the message that tends to be lost in music these days.

Backstreet Boys - Show 'Em (What You're Made Of)

Backstreet's back, alright! And wow, they look better than ever (except for AJ, I mean what's with the beard?) Did anyone know that they made an album in 2013? Or that they finally got their Star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame? Regardless of that, they come to prove that they are the kings of the boy band, especially with this song. Just enough cheese in this song, it melts into a gooey, delicious song with a mouth-watering video to match it. Oh boys, I don't know how you do it, but keep coming back anytime!

Demi Lovato - Neon Lights

Had a hard time with this song, because I didn't really enjoy it much at first. In my opinion, I thought Miss Lovato was trying too hard with the Dance scene... But after a while, I'm digging it! Now I'm rather sad that I didn't feature this in my Top 100 (a Demi song in this entry!) While she may be known for her amazing vocal range, the clash between her voice and the rhythm make a good impression for someone trying to break into the Dance scene. It may not be a dance floor anthem, but it's certainly worthy to rock out to for a while. Oh Demi, please keep adventuring in music!

Robin Thicke ft Kendrick Lamar - Give It 2 U

I will admit that I did like the song more than his previous hit, but I'm not that bummed out that I left this song out of my Top 100. I just forgot about it, being overwhelmed by how much music I enjoyed from 2013. But here we are with the charming(?) Robin Thicke, who actually now lives in Vancouver (I was wondering why he was nominated for a Juno). But this song is entertaining, even though the message is not any better than the previous hit. Add in the hottest rapper of the moment, and you've got something magical. It's no hint he's trying to be sexual here, but I wonder what it'll be like if he went to his old days... Oh, those were good times.

Avril Lavigne ft Chad Kroeger - Let Me Go

Another piece I forgot to add to my Top 100 - but I guess it's okay, it was already at 190 o_o I love it when Avril Lavigne sings ballad, because they are truly incredible, and it shows what she is capable of. Throw in her husband, and you get what is actually a nice piece. It's not exactly the most romantic song when you think of duets, but it shows a softer side that is rare of Lavigne. It's a shame that the radio doesn't really play her. With such talent, why hide her? I mean, she sang for the Olympics! Here's to (hoping) she gets her spot once again.

Empire Of The Sun - Alive

This month is March Madness, where every week I'll be posting the songs I forgot about in 2013 ._. I was literally screaming at myself for not including this in my Top 100 of 2013! I even knew this song before a bunch of the others that eventually made it into the Top 100 T_T But oh well, let's talk about this masterpiece: I will admit that their high-pitched singing is hard to decipher, but the chorus is all that matters. It's silly, but also amazing how you get so high listening to it, from the beginning it gets to you. So strange, but strange enough to keep you intrigued by the piece.

Sex Bomb Girls - Spaghetti Song

When I was in high school, there was this girl I talked to via MSN Messenger (that long ago!) I never met her, but I there was one thing that I do remember from her: this song. Don't remember what we were talking about, but I must say this was quite the highlight. She described them as the Philippines' version of the Spice Girls, and this particular song had a dance. I tried to find the video, but I never did. So I am assuming the video clip above shows the actual dance... probably not going to try it. I have no idea what's going on in the song, but I love it for its cheekiness. Better quality of the song here.

Sandara Park - Ang Ganda Ko

What amazes me about Sandara Park is the fact I didn't know she is Korean for the longest time. Before being part of 2NE1, she was a star in the Philippines. She act, she sang, she pretty much did what every Filipino star does these days. From the film D'Lucky Ones, I was obsessed with the song mainly for the line about feeling her long hair d": Compared to her recent works, this may be the worst song she ever made. That being said, I do hope she makes more Tagalog songs, because her Tagalog is amazing - that may be why I wouldn't have guessed she is Korean. Congrats on her success!

Yeng Constantino - Chinito

What a cute song that basically describes me... I mean, I am one d": The term "Chinito" means Chinese boy, and though I may not fully understand the song, it's about how much she likes him, and it so happens to be a Chinese boy. The song is cute, it's borderline cheesy, but the video makes it up. I love the simplicity of the whole idea, and it's no wonder why they used it as the theme for the film Bride For Rent. Basically, this song sums up my life: A Chinese Filipino who loves cheesy romance. What can I say, I love them love stories ^^

Fruitcake - Whoops Kirri

If you watch enough TFC (The Filipino Channel), then you would know the theme song for the film Girl Boy Bakla Tomboy. What I didn't know was how old the song was, and that it was re-made for the movie. Originally released in 1998, the song was slower, and more comical (if that makes any sense considering its construction). And what makes me interested is how the song is all in English... Don't you know, Filipinos learn both Tagalog and English at the same time! They are intelligent people who love entertainment. This song shows how fun-spirited they can be. Oh, the 90s!

Johnny Cash - Hurt

This was actually a big surprise for me on the countdown, as I would have never expected such an artist to appear on the channel at all. Although he covers the song originally from Nine Inch Nails, you can feel the deep emotions he puts into this composition. To me, this rendition allows you to feel what the song is suppose to deliver, how some times will be difficult, how people change, and that what we do is not intentional even though it pains others. The last song he released, it's a magnificent piece by Cash, turning the whole message around with one word, and he couldn't have made it any better. At #12, may he always be remembered, through his music, the movie about his life, and his gift.

Fatboy Slim - Weapon Of Choice

Popularly known as Fatboy Slim, Norman Cook has to be one of the most underrated DJs in music. I'm pretty sure you have heard of his music everywhere, as it tends to be used in media from commercials, movies, and anything in between. Watching the countdown, it comes in at #15 with Christopher Walken dancing throughout the whole video, and it's incredible. He was a dancer before he got into acting, which explains the fluidity of his dance moves. But the song, it's nostalgic and fun for just about any occasion: clubs, social gatherings, bored in a hotel. I didn't even know that Cook sampled Sly & The Family Stone, which goes to show you that there is much more music to discover in years to come.

Kardinal Offishall ft Jully Black, Allistair, IRS, & Wio-K
- Ol' Time Killin'

There is always that random song that gets onto the countdown for really no reason. I do admit that the video is simple and pleasing to see, but I do not necessarily agree with the ranking it got. Coming in at #19, Kardinal Offishall's earlier pieces show how incredibly talented the artist has always been, even though his music doesn't sound much like this these days. It's a good throwback for fun, and it shows how time has changed from music to fashion. But this song is important, as it's one of the first songs where Kardinal got attention for his craft, which lead to many other successes. So here's to a great artist that hopefully will make more music in the year 2014.

New Old Music

D'Angelo - Untitled (How Does It Feel)

At #23, this is one of the most sexiest videos from any artist out there, and what makes it incredible is how he's just standing there - naked. Although this song would be nothing without the video, let's redirect the attention to the song. It's about how he yearns for some love from his partner, and directs the passion towards them. You can feel the intensity, the pain that kills him wanting to have a special moment with this special someone. And if it wasn't sexy enough, the high notes he hits are so powerful, it makes you want to swoon over how hard he's trying (those damn guitars do help show this man's needs). Can't believe this was released back in 2000, it's truly a piece that won't ever be dated.
